Mr. Istiak Ahmed Bappy: I began my academic journey with a Bachelor’s in English from Southeast University, followed by a Master’s in English Literature from East West University. These studies equipped me with essential skills in communication, analysis, and critical thinking, which have been invaluable in my professional career.
My career commenced at Studio Ecotecture Limited as an Executive in Administration, where I managed a wide array of administrative tasks, including vehicle management, official purchases, and maintaining crucial documentation. This role provided me with hands-on experience in handling day-to-day operations and addressing various administrative challenges.
I then moved to Concito PR Private Limited, starting as an Executive in Media Monitoring. My responsibilities included media monitoring, daily reporting, and creating detailed media performance analyses for different brands and clients. I was promoted to Lead, Media Monitoring, where I managed a team and coordinated report deliveries to clients. My tenure here honed my leadership skills and my ability to manage teams effectively under tight deadlines.
In 2021, I joined The Daily Star, the leading English newspaper in Bangladesh, as an Executive in Administration. Currently, I am working as an Assistant Manager, Administration. My responsibilities include team leadership, procurement, and maintaining administrative operations. I also play a key role in large-scale event management, including guest list preparation and client communication. Additionally, my role involves asset management, telecommunication tasks, employee engagement activities, and maintaining liaison with government offices when necessary.
What initiatives or projects have you led at The Daily Star that have had a significant impact on the company’s efficiency or culture?
At The Daily Star, one of the significant projects I led was the improvement of our event management processes. By streamlining guest list preparations and enhancing client communication, we ensured the successful completion of events, which not only improved operational efficiency but also boosted our team’s reputation. I also led various employee engagement activities, such as anniversary day celebrations and indoor games. Additionally, I took the initiative to enhance our administrative documentation system, making it more accessible and organized. This has significantly reduced the time spent on retrieving information and improved overall workflow.
In your opinion, what are the essential qualities of an effective leader in the administrative sector?
An effective leader in the administrative sector must possess strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously. Communication skills are crucial for liaising with different departments and external stakeholders. A good leader should also be adaptable, able to handle unexpected challenges with poise, and ensure that their team is motivated and supported. Lastly, integrity and accountability are key to maintaining trust and ensuring that all administrative tasks are handled ethically and efficiently.
Is there a mentor or role model who has significantly impacted your professional journey, and what lessons have you learned from their guidance?
Yes, he is my supervisor, Mahmudul Hasan Khan. His mentorship has been invaluable, especially in teaching me the importance of maintaining composure in complex and challenging situations. From him, I have learned the art of staying calm under pressure, a skill that is essential in the fast-paced and often unpredictable world of administration. Observing him handle high-stress scenarios with a steady demeanor has shown me the power of a calm mind in making rational and effective decisions.
What motivated you to pursue a career in administration, and how did your early life experiences shape this decision?
My motivation for a career in administration stemmed from my keen interest in organizational management and my early experiences of participating in university events and managing small projects. These activities honed my skills in coordination, planning, and execution. My academic background in English also played a role, as it enhanced my communication skills, which are vital in administration. These experiences collectively shaped my decision to pursue a path where I could utilize my strengths to contribute to the efficient running of an organization.
If you could go back in time and give your younger self one piece of advice, what would it be and why?
