Malaysia’s former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has announced that he will run again in the upcoming 15th national election. The 97-year-old veteran politician will contest the election from his parliamentary constituency Langkawi. Mahathir himself announced this in a press conference on October 11, 2022. Mahathir said his party would contest at least 120 seats during the polls, including Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang) in Sabah. He will fight to become a party member of parliament. But he will not be the prime ministerial candidate. He said we have not decided who will be the prime minister. Because if we win, the issue of becoming the Prime Minister will come. And losing is irrelevant.

He said Gerakan Tanah Air is not yet registered. However, all the candidates will fight under the banner of Pejuang in the upcoming elections. The Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA) team was announced last August with four units. The parties are Pejuang, Putra, National Indian Muslim Alliance Party (IMAN), and Parti Barisan Jemaah Islamia C-Malaysia.

On October 10, 2022, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced the dissolution of Malaysia’s parliament in a televised address after receiving the King’s assent. The Election Commission is expected to meet within a week to announce the poll date. According to the constitution, Malaysia’s national election must be held within 60 days of the dissolution of parliament.

Dr. Mahathir served as the Prime Minister of Malaysia for 22 years until 2003. He returned as prime minister after leading Pakatan Harapan (PH) to a historic victory in 2018. However, in 2020, the PH government fell due to infighting.
