Dhaka, Bangladesh – August 15, 2024: The government has appointed Abdur Rahman Khan, who was serving as the secretary to the Financial Institutions Division (FID), as the new chairman of the National Board of Revenue (NBR). This move comes after the contractual appointment of Abu Hena Md Rahmatul Muneem was terminated, according to a notification from the public administration ministry.
In addition to his role as NBR chairman, Khan will also take on the duties of secretary to the Internal Resources Division (IRD) under the finance ministry.
Muneem had originally joined the NBR in January 2020 for a four-year term, which was extended by two years in January of this year. However, his replacement follows demands from certain revenue officials after a mass uprising led to the fall of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government on August 5. An interim government took office on August 8 and subsequently decided to cancel all contractual appointments.
Muneem, who began his career in the Bangladesh Civil Service within the administration cadre, previously served as secretary to the Energy and Mineral Resources Division before his tenure at the NBR.
The protesting NBR officials had been advocating for the appointment of a leader from the customs or income tax cadres, rather than someone from the administration cadre. Khan, who joined the civil service in the tax cadre in 1994, has experience in the IRD and Finance Division and was promoted to secretary in May this year.
