Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that Germany would temporarily cut the sales tax on gas to support consumers meeting soaring bills amid a crunch in Russian energy supplies. Mr. Scholz said the move to cut the VAT on gas to 7% from 19% was currently intended to offset an energy surcharge in the wake of the Ukraine war foreseen to cost households hundreds of euros. The article is about Germany to Lessen Tax on Gas.

“The discounted sales tax will apply as long as the gas surcharge is being applied, until March 31, 2024,” he said. But, he also said, “With this measure, we are offering gas customers relief significantly larger than the extra burden imposed by the surcharges.”
