The journey of Sabyasachi Mukherjee:
Mukherjee has always been fascinated with artistry, dating back to his boyhood. He was born into a Bengali middle-class family. His mother was a Government College professor, while his father worked an ordinary job. He was constantly inspired by the well-known designer Rohit Khosla when he was younger. Sabyasachi chose to pursue his passion for fashion when he was 15 years old. On the other hand, his father lost his work at the same time. His parents refused to back him up in his decision, and they lacked the financial means to assist him through his education.
Only because his parents refused to pay for his National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) test, he excaped from home and worked as a server in Goa for a brief time. Sabyasachi was so committed to his cause that he sold all of his books and worked nonstop to pay for his schooling. He chose to start his label with Rs. 20,000 loan from his sister after graduating from NIFT in 1999. Only three people worked at the business when it first opened. In the workshop, he mended beds and made his work his life. He worked on his ideas overnight, and this pattern persisted for nearly five years. Finally, in 2002, Sabyasachi made his debut at the Indian Fashion Week.
The Women’s Wear Daily applauded him and declared him the future of Indian fashion, which pushed him to pursue his aspirations even more. He won the Grand Winner Award at the Mercedes Benz New Asia Fashion Week in Singapore in 2003, which marked his first international catwalk appearance. Everyone was praising the man, and this was only the beginning. Sabyasachi represented his label at many fashion events, with 2006 serving as a watershed moment in his career. He was asked to present The Nair Sisters collection at the famous Oxford University annual black-tie charity evening fashion show. That’s when he caught everyone’s notice, and people all around the world began to recognize him.
He showcased his magnificent collection of designs at New York Fashion Week, London Fashion Week, Bridal Asia, Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week, Miami Fashion Week, and more. Sabyasachi is a master at making an outfit stand out and look spectacular. Sabyasachi Mukherjee collaborated with Christian Louboutin, French luxury footwear and fashion designer, for her Autumn Winter 2015 collection during Amazon India Couture Week (AICW).
Sabyasachi works for a cause in addition to his national and international endeavors. He created a business called Save the Saree, in which he sells hand-woven Indian sarees for Rs. 3500 on a non-profit basis, with all proceeds going to the Murshidabad weavers. Bollywood stars like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Vidya Balan have also supported this cause.
