According to the World Bank, the project aims to tackle the effects of climate change through flood management, drainage, and modernization of irrigation infrastructure. It will assist in creating climate tolerance, improved irrigation, flood management, and drainage services in 120,000 hectares of land. This is expected to reduce flood damage by 60 percent.
The project will rehabilitate some people, the press release said. It has identified flood management, irrigation, and drainage sub-projects in poor and climate change risk areas. One lakh farmers will be trained on climate tolerant agricultural technology, crop diversification, and post-harvest management through this. In addition, the project will help improve indigenous species conservation, disease control and management.
Another objective of the project is to ensure improvement in the local market by setting up cold storage and thereby cultivating paddy and fish or shrimp. As a result, it will increase fish production by about 36 percent, vegetables by 10 percent, and rice production by 7.5 percent.
Fatima Yasmin, Secretary, Department of Economic Relations, Government of Bangladesh, and Dandan Chen, Acting Country Director, World Bank, recently signed the loan agreement. The loan is provided by the World Bank’s International Development Association (IDA). This loan is being given for 35 years with a grace period of 5 years break.
