Western car manufacturers have ventured into Russia to assemble cars over the past two decades as the country’s economy boomed. But since Moscow sent soldiers into Ukraine in February, a number of car makers have stopped selling their cars or parts to Russia, including Audi, Honda, Jaguar, and Porsche. In addition, many companies have stopped Russian production including BMW, Ford, Hyundai, Mercedes, Volkswagen, and Volvo. Iran and Turkey share a land border, when Russia shares a maritime border with Iran and Turkey across the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, respectively.

Turkey already exports more than $12 billion of automobile spare parts, while Iran was ranked the 19th largest automaker in the globe in 2021, according to the International Organization of Automobile Manufacturers. According to OICA data, IRNA reported that Iranian automakers produced 894,298 vehicles in 2021.
