Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the former President of Sri Lanka who fled the country in the face of continued protests, has returned to Sri Lanka from Thailand via Singapore. Security has been beefed up since September 2, 2022, amid Gotabaya’s return. The law and order forces were alert to avoid any untoward incident. However, Mr. Rajapaksa arrived safely in Colombo on September 3, 2022. It can be seen from the video circulated in the media that some country ministers welcomed him at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo. He is also greeted with flowers. So, the article defines that Gotabaya Rajapaksa Returned To Sri Lanka.
According to the reports, the former President expressed interest in staying in a private bungalow in the Mirihana area after returning to the country. But he was not permitted to remain there for security reasons. After receiving a warm welcome from Sri Lanka’s ruling Padujana Peramuna (SLPP) leaders and ministers, Mr. Gotabaya left the airport amid tight security. A group of armed soldiers closely guarded his convoy. From there, he was taken to the Abhijan Cinnamon Garden area. There he is kept in a bungalow controlled by the government. Strict security measures have been taken in this area, including the surrounding area. According to the country’s constitution, former Presidents receive housing, personal security, and necessary staff benefits from the government.
Mr. Gotabaya was forced to leave after massive protests, and leaving power is a sensitive issue for the Sri Lankan government. In this situation, the current President, Ranil Wickremesinghe, does not want any new protests or instability to be created in the country. For that reason, he has arranged adequate security across the country.
Father Jiwanta Peiris, who led the movement for Gotabaya’s resignation, said, “We are not against Gotabaya’s return to the country. As a Sri Lankan citizen, it is his right to live in the country.” At that time, the common people came out on the streets because they were against the continued corruption of the government. None of the protesters have any personal enmity with Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
Protesters attacked his government residence and office on July 13, blaming him for the country’s economic disaster. At that time, he left the country and fled to Singapore with his wife in the face of continuous protests. He announced his resignation from there and later stayed in Thailand for some time.
