The time has come to decide who will be Pakistan’s new Army Chief. A senior leader of the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) party in the central cabinet indicated that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will start cabinet discussions on the matter by August 2022 and finalize the matter next month. So the question is Who Will be The Next Army Chief of Pakistan?

According to the report, General Qamar Javed Bajwa is currently the Head of the Country’s Army. While Army Chiefs are elected for three-year terms, Mr. Qamar Javed was dramatically nominated for a second term in 2019. He is retiring in November of 2022. Interestingly, four of the six senior lieutenants at the time of his retirement are from his batch. The name of these six people is Lieut. General Asim Munir, Lieut. General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, Lieut. General Azhar Abbas, Lieut. General Noman Mehmood, Lieut. General Faiz Hamid and Lt. General Mohammad Amir. Luckily, one of these six will be Pakistan’s next Army Chief.

The Prime Minister usually consults with his cabinet and advisory council before deciding who will be the next army chief. However, a spokesperson of the Pakistan People’s Party said that the matter is entirely under the jurisdiction of the Prime Minister and therefore, the party does not want to take any decision. According to Article 243, Clause 3 of the Constitution of the country, the President appoints the Chief of Army Staff on the recommendation of the Prime Minister. A list of the four or five most senior lieutenant generals is usually sent to the home ministry from army headquarters, along with their resumes. Then the Prime Minister selects one person from that list.
