The famous 1964 silk-screen picture of Marilyn Monroe by pop artist Andy Warhol has sold for $195 million, making it the most expensive 20th-century artwork ever sold at a public auction. Following her death in 1962, Mr. Warhol painted a series of portraits of the actress, including Shot Sage Blue Marilyn, which has become one of pop art’s most well-known works. So, Warhol’s Marilyn Portrait Sold For World Record $195m.

In a crowded room at Christie’s offices in New York on May 9, 2022, it sold for exactly $195.04 million, including fees, in just four minutes. It was valued at $200 million. In a statement announcing the auction, Alex Rotter, chairman of Christie’s 20th and 21st Century art, said,” ‘Shot Sage Blue Marilyn’ is the absolute apex of American Pop.” “The painting transcends the genre of portraiture, superseding 20th-century art and culture.”

Women of Algiers by Pablo Picasso, which sold for $179.4 million in 2015, was the previous record for a 20th-century piece. Warhol painted brilliant colors over Monroe’s eyes, hair, and lips based on a promotional photo from the 1953 film Niagara. Mr. Warhol passed away in 1987.
