Md Afzal Karim finally joined the state-owned Sonali Bank Ltd. as its CEO and Managing Director on August 28, 2022. Before joining, he paid tribute to the picture of Father of Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by positioning wreaths at Bank Bhaban. He was assigned for this position by the consent of the Bangladesh government provided through the letter dated August 14, 2022, of the Financial Institutions Division, Ministry of Finance. Before his new assignment, he conformed to Bangladesh House Building Finance Corporation (BHFC) as the Managing Director. So, Md Afzal Karim Joined Sonali Bank as CEO & MD.

Previously, he had worked as Deputy Managing Director of Sonali Bank Limited and Bangladesh Krishi Bank, respectively. Mr. Karim was only recevied the Integrity Award among all MDs and CEOs of banks and financial institutions under Financial Institution Division, Ministry of Finance, for the 2021-2022 financial year in recognition of his truthfulness and efficiency.

Having 27 years of diversified knowledge in banking, Md. Afzal Karim began his career in Bangladesh House Building Finance Corporation as Senior Principal Officer in 1995. He later served as Deputy General Manager and General Manager (Current Charge) in BHFC and General Manager of Bangladesh Krishi Bank, with various departments’ responsibilities. Priot to joining BHFC, he worked for eight years in responsible positions in four other domestic and foreign organizations, including government institutions, the release adds.

He obtained a BSC in Mechanical Engineering from Khulna University of Engineering and Technology. He also received Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Management (PGDIM) from the Bangladesh Institute of Management (BIM) and an MBA (Major in Finance & Banking). He experienced various training courses, seminars, and workshops on banking activities held at home and abroad and traveled to multiple countries, including Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Italy.
