Serena Williams Announced Her Retirement From Tennis

Tennis legend Serena Williams announced her retirement from Tennis. She wrote, “I have never liked the word ‘retirement’. Maybe the best word to explain what I’m up to is ‘evolution’. I’m here to announce you that I’m evolving away from Tennis toward other things that are important to me.” Ms. Williams, who turns 41, has 73 career singles titles, 23 career doubles titles, and more than $94 million in career winnings. Williams is widely hailed as one of the greatest athletes of everytime. She told she will retire after the U.S. Open, which will run from late August into September. She said about the tournament, which is played in Queens, “I don’t know if I will be ready to win New York. But I’m going to try.” 

She has counted sponsorships from Nike, Audemars Piguet, Away, Beats, Bumble, Gatorade, Gucci, Lincoln, Michelob, Nintendo, Wilson Sporting Goods, and Procter and Gamble. Nike said it would continue working with Williams. Serena Williams redefined what it means to be a true champion. Her legacy transcends sport and has inspired generations. They also said, “We look forward to continuing our long-standing partnership with her. And, we thank her for all she has done and will do in the future.”

Ms. Williams focused on her family in the announcement, writing that her nearly five-year-old daughter wants to be an older sister. In an Instagram post, she added, “I have to focus on being a mom, my spiritual goals, and finally discovering a different, but just exciting Serena. I’m gonna relish these next few weeks.” Professionally, she looks to expand Serena Ventures,which is an investment firm of six people. Her company raised $111 million in outside financing this year.
